The AKS-74u is a compact assault rifle designed for close quarters combat. Designed in 1979, it was derived from the AK-74 and issued primarily to the Spetznaz special forces.
It fires the 5.45x39mm cartridge, which is a high-velocity improvement over the traditional 7.62x39mm Soviet round. As the round enters soft tissue a hollow cavity in the tip of the projectile deforms and induces yaw, increasing trauma to the target.
